Building the Presentation Layer of OBIEE


Presentation layer is used to provide customized views of Business model in BMM layer to users. Subject areas are used in Presentation layer provided by Oracle BI Presentation Services.

Presentation layer Objects:

The subject area: is the highest-level object in the presentation layer and represents the view of the data that end users see when they create or edit an analyses.

Presentation tables and presentation columns appear as folders and columns in Oracle BI Answers. You can customize presentation tables and presentation columns to help users craft queries based on their business needs.


Creating Presentation Layer Objects

Creating a Subject Area

  • Right-click the white space in the Presentation layer and select New Subject Area to open the Subject Area dialog box.

  • On the General tab, enter Supermarket as the name of the subject area.

  • Click OK to close the Subject Area dialog box. The Sample Sales subject area is added to the Presentation layer.

  • Right-click the Supermarket subject area and select New Presentation Table to open the Presentation Table dialog box

  • On the General tab, enter Product as the name of the presentation table. Click OK to close the Presentation Table dialog box.

  • The Product presentation table is added to the Supermarket subject area.

  • Repeat the process and add all required presentation tables as below.

  • Now to add columns of the created table in presentation layer, expand the D1 Product logical table of BMM layer.
  • Select the logical columns

  • Drag the selected logical columns to the Product presentation table in the Presentation layer.

  • Repeat the process and add the logical columns to all remaining presentation tables.


Modifying Presentation Layer Objects in OBIEE

Renaming Presentation Columns

To edit presentation layer Objects: First set Edit presentation names options:

  • In the Administration Tool, select Tools, then select Options to display the Options dialog.
  • On the General tab, select the Edit presentation names options you want to choose.

  • Double-click the ATTRIBUTE_ID presentation column to open the Presentation Column dialog box.
  • Deselect Use Logical Column Name. The Name field is now editable.
  • Enter Attribute Id in Name field and click ok.

  • The point here is you can change object names in the Presentation layer without impacting object names in the BMM or Physical layers.

  • Arrange the columns of a table In the Presentation layer, double-click the Product presentation table to open the Presentation Table dialog box.
  • Click the Columns tab
  • Select columns and use the up and down arrows, or drag the columns to rearrange the presentation columns.

  • Arrange the tables in the Presentation layer, In the Presentation layer, double-click the supermarket subject area to open the subject area dialog box.
  • Click the presentation tables tab
  • Select tables and use the up and down arrows, or drag the tables to rearrange the presentation tables.

Presentation Column Properties:

  • In the Presentation layer, double-click the presentation column to open the Presentation Column dialog.
  • In the General tab, to specify a name that is different from the Logical Column name, clear Use Logical Column Name, and then type a name for the column.

  • To set permissions for this presentation column, click Permissions (see above picture).
  • Read- Only allows read access to this object.
  • Read/Write- Provides both read and write access to this object.
  • No Access- Explicitly denies all access to this object.
  • Default- The permission is inherited from the parent object.

Presentation Column Properties

  • Select Custom display name or Custom description to dynamically display a custom name or custom description based on a session variable, typically for localization purposes.
  • The Logical Column field displays the name of the logical column for this presentation column. Click Edit to make any changes to the logical column object.
  • Hide object if Leave this field blank (the default) to show the object.
  • Use the Aliases tab to specify or delete aliases for this. Presentation

  • In the Presentation layer, double-click the presentation table to open the Presentation table dialog.
  • In the General tab, you can change the name for the presentation table. Note that aliases are created automatically whenever presentation objects are renamed, so that any queries using the original name do not break.
  • To set permissions for this presentation table, click Permissions.
  • Read- Only allows read access to this object.
  • Read/Write- Provides both read and write access to this object.
  • No Access- Explicitly denies all access to this object.
  • Default- The permission is inherited from the parent object.

  • Select Custom display name or Custom description to dynamically display a custom name or custom description based on a session variable, typically for localization purposes.
  • Hide object if- Leave this field blank (the default) to show the object.
  • Use the Aliases tab to specify or delete aliases for this presentation column.
  • In the Columns tab, you can add, remove, edit, or reorder the presentation columns for this presentation table.
  • In the Hierarchies tab, you can add, remove, edit, or reorder the presentation hierarchies for this presentation table.
  • Use the Child Presentation Tables tab to specify presentation tables that you want to show as nested folders in Answers and BI Composer.
  • Click Ok.

Presentation Subject Area Properties

  • In the Presentation layer, double-click the subject area to open the subject area dialog.
  • In the General tab, you can change the name for the subject area. Note that aliases are created automatically whenever presentation objects are renamed, so that any queries using the original name do not break.

  • To set permissions for this subject area, click Permissions.
  • Read- Only allows read access to this object.
  • Read/Write- Provides both read and write access to this object.
  • No Access- Explicitly denies all access to this object.
  • Default- The permission is inherited from the parent object.

  • Select Custom display name or Custom description to dynamically display a custom name or custom description based on a session variable, typically for localization purposes
  • Hide object if- Leave this field blank (the default) to show the object.
  • The Business model list displays the business model for this subject area.
  • To expose the logical keys to other applications, select the option Export logical keys.
  • In the Presentation Tables tab, you can add, remove, edit, or reorder the presentation tables for this subject area.
  • Use the Aliases tab to specify or delete aliases for this subject area.
  • Click Ok
